What to eat to protect your eyes

How to reduce the risk of glaucoma, the second most common cause of blindness after cataracts in the least developed countries?

This is essentially the question that researchers at Brigham & Women's Hospital in association with the Haward Medical School (USA) asked themselves.

The study published in JAMA Ophthalmology provides some answers. The scientists recommend the consumption of foods rich in nitrate: green vegetables such as spinach, cabbage or salad.

To obtain these results, the researchers conducted eye exams on 105,000 participants from two different studies. The people surveyed, 64,000 women and 41,000 men, were over 40 years of age and did not suffer from glaucoma. Their consumption of nitrates and the risk of developing the disease were analyzed. The result was that those who regularly consumed green vegetables had a 30% lower risk of developing glaucoma.

According to scientists, the nutrients improve blood flow and clean the small vessels surrounding the eye. Research is underway to confirm these convincing results.
